CULTURAL CONTEXT AND POLICY DESIGN: CHALLENGES FACED BY CHENCHU WOMEN IN ANDHRA PRADESH
Abstract
Abstract:
This research investigates the complex socio-cultural challenges confronting Chenchu women in Andhra Pradesh, offering a comprehensive analysis of the intersectional barriers that impede their social, economic, and personal empowerment. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach combining qualitative case studies, quantitative data analysis, and extensive ethnographic observations, the study examines the intricate dynamics of gender inequality within the Chenchu tribal community. The research reveals significant systemic challenges across multiple dimensions: educational access, healthcare infrastructure, economic opportunities, and deeply entrenched cultural norms. Statistical analyses demonstrate alarming disparities, with data indicating that 55% of Chenchu women have no formal education, 50% lack comprehensive healthcare access, and traditional patriarchal structures persistently restrict women's socio-economic mobility. Three compelling case studies—Anjali, Lakshmi, and Geeta—provide nuanced insights into individual experiences, illustrating the multifaceted challenges faced by Chenchu women. These narratives highlight the profound impact of cultural practices on women's life trajectories, ranging from educational marginalization to healthcare inequities and economic constraints. The study proposes a holistic policy framework emphasizing gender-sensitive interventions, including targeted educational programs, improved healthcare infrastructure, vocational training initiatives, and community awareness campaigns. By challenging traditional gender norms and promoting women's agency, the research advocates for transformative strategies that can potentially revolutionize the socio-economic landscape for Chenchu women. Ultimately, this research contributes critical insights into indigenous gender dynamics, offering a comprehensive understanding of the structural barriers inhibiting Chenchu women's empowerment and presenting evidence-based recommendations for meaningful social change.
