‘CHOJUN’: A FOLK FESTIVAL OF KARBI PEOPLE OF NORTH EAST INDIA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MIDDLE ASSAM.

Abstract:

The people who are credited with the little of Columbus of Assam, the Karbis of North Eastern India, one of their major festivals is ‘Chojun puja’. It is basically a kind of worship, where they offer prayers to the Gods in heaven. This occasion lasts for three days. The great historian of Assam Dr. S.K. Bhuyan once wrote that, one lesson which the tribal people can teach us is their self-sufficiency in domestic economy. This very self-sufficient nature of tribal community can be noticed in their of celebration of different festivals and ‘Chojun puja’, organised by the karbi people of North-east India, in a determined gap of time is a brightest example of their self-sufficient nature and strong belief system. In the present paper, we will not only introduce the festival in detail, but will also shed light on some of the important topics which altogether coustitutes the “karbi society” and their belief system.
