POTTERY AS AN EVIDENCE OF FOLK-ART IN MAJULI: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS

Abstract:

            Pottery is called the first alphabet of archaeologists. The base of creation of every folk art is need. It is for need people started making of pottery. Pottery is also an art amongst all the earliest art and craft. With the development of human civilization, demand for necessities and tendency to make daily usable objects inspired human beings to engage with various artwork. Making of earthenware is a crop of intellectual ascension of human civilization. According to researchers, the history of pottery in Assam is as ancient as cultural development in Neolithic age. Various places of Assam specially Majuli, Gaurisagar, Kakodanga, Dhawali, Kasomari, Nanai; Namfakiyals of Dibrugarh district, many places of Shivsagar, such as Chinadi, Bamuna, Ghoramarahoti, Badarurtup, Sundaridiya etc., Kokilamukh, Dharamtul etc. of Nagaon district are the centre of pottery.
